COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF WATERFORD'S COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM IS STUDENT SUCCESS. WE BELIEVE IN WORKING TOGETHER TO ADVOCATE FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AND ARE DEDICATED TO ENHANCING THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. OUR K-8 PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICES DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THREE DOMAINS OF STUDENT DEVELOPMENT: ACADEMIC, PERSONAL/SOCIAL, AND CAREER. PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO E-MAIL, SPEAK BY PHONE, OR MAKE AN APPOINTMENT IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS AN ISSUE WITH THEIR CHILD’S COUNSELOR.

The K-12 counseling program implemented in the Waterford Graded School District is intended to address the needs of the whole child at developmentally appropriate age levels and to build a foundation of good decision-making skills that serves the student into adulthood. The goal is to help all students learn about themselves and the world around them while making meaningful connections between the two. For more information on this program please click here.

Anger Management/Emotional Regulation
Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. And it can make you feel as though you're at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion.

Anxiety
Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. Many people feel nervous when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision. Anxiety disorders are different, though. They can cause such distress that it interferes with your ability to lead a normal life.

ADHD
Does your child have a hard time controlling his or her behavior? For some children, these may be symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

Bullying
Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions.

Death/Grief
Death is inevitable, yet the loss of a close friend or family member always showers us with a range of emotions. Explore resources and ways to support your family.

Depression
Depression is more than just feeling sad or going through a rough patch. It’s a serious mental health condition that requires understanding, treatment and a good recovery plan. With early detection, diagnosis and a treatment plan consisting of medication, psychotherapy and lifestyle choices, many people get better. But left untreated, depression can be devastating, both for the people who have it and for their families.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness involves intentionally bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment. It can be developed through the practice of meditation, which can be defined as the intentional self-regulation of attention from moment to moment.
